Overview

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) launched the nation’s largest direct-install program to provide accessible EV charging infrastructure to disadvantaged communities across Sacramento County. This groundbreaking initiative aimed to reduce emissions, expand EV adoption, and bridge the equity gap in clean transportation access for residential customers in underserved areas.

The challenge

The principals of Encharge personally led the engagement with SMUD, leveraging their expertise in EV infrastructure and project management to establish Loop Global as the exclusive supplier for SMUD’s direct-install program. Over the past three years, this partnership has resulted in the deployment of over 1,500 Level 2 charging stations, significantly improving access to EV charging for disadvantaged residential customers in Sacramento County.

Key contributions by Encharge’s principals

  1. Strategic Partnership Development
    • Negotiated and secured Loop Global’s position as the exclusive hardware supplier for SMUD’s program.
    • Established a collaborative framework with SMUD to streamline program deployment.
  2. Innovative EV Charging Solutions
    • Supplied Loop Level 2 chargers, equipped with advanced network software for seamless operation.
    • Tailored hardware and software solutions to meet SMUD’s specific program goals.
  3. Program Management and Execution
    • Oversaw the end-to-end supply chain for charger delivery, ensuring timely and cost-effective rollouts.
    • Collaborated with SMUD and residential customers to ensure proper installation and activation at diverse site locations.
  4. Focus on Equity and Accessibility
    • Ensured the program prioritized disadvantaged communities, aligning with SMUD’s mission to improve equity in clean transportation access.
    • Provided ongoing support to ensure chargers remained operational and accessible to residents.

The result

Through the combined leadership of Encharge’s principals and the exclusive supply of Loop’s cutting-edge EV chargers, the SMUD direct-install program achieved remarkable outcomes:

  • 1,500+ Charging Stations Deployed: Delivered and activated Level 2 chargers to disadvantaged residential customers across Sacramento County.
  • Nation-Leading Program: Supported the nation’s largest direct-install initiative for EV charging in underserved communities.
  • Improved Equity: Enabled greater access to clean transportation infrastructure for disadvantaged residents, helping bridge the gap in EV adoption.
